The Nuhanovic Foundation

An initiative to showcase the lived experiences of survivors of international crimes and grave human rights violations.

International Law is under pressure, and impunity is on the rise.

From Ukraine and Afghanistan to Iraq and Palestine, international crimes and grave human rights violations continue to test the limits of global justice. Too often, perpetrators escape accountability while survivors are left fighting to have their voices heard.

But change is happening. Across the Netherlands and beyond, survivors are boldly demanding justice, accountability, and redress. Many are taking legal action to confront the harm they or their families have endured. With the support of civil society actors like The Nuhanovic Foundation, national courts including those in the Netherlands are increasingly stepping up to provide survivors with a platform to pursue justice.

At this pivotal moment, we’re proud to introduce our campaign Justice: From War to Democracy and Freedom, an initiative to showcase the lived experiences of survivors and their communities. Through Justice Journeys, a series of portraits created by acclaimed photographers, survivors’ resilience, courage, and pursuit of justice are brought into focus, making justice, accountability and reparation tangible ideals.

Support our work and make access to justice a reality.

Want To Support Our Work?

Survivors of war crimes are knocking on the doors of Dutch courts.

But without access to the necessary support, survivors often face several barriers while seeking access to justice and reparation. The costs of legal advice and logistical expenses, coupled with the scarcity of much needed mental health support, create hurdles for individuals who already face barriers to justice. Through the Nuhanovic Fund for Legal Action, we are working to remove those barriers. Every victim of international crimes or grave human rights abuses deserves access to justice, not just in theory, but in practice.

This year, The Nuhanovic Foundation is raising €20,000 to expand the Nuhanovic Fund for Legal Action, which enables victims, survivors, and witnesses of grave human rights violations to seek justice in Dutch and international courts. From civil claims against the Dutch State to evidence-based accountability for war criminals on Dutch soil, our legal network and partners help survivors access the justice they were denied during conflict.

By contributing to our campaign, you are supporting survivor-led legal efforts with the potential to change lives, shape law, and strengthen systems of accountability. This is not symbolic. These are real cases, based on the experiences of real people. And with your help, they can move forward.

Donate today. Help us ensure that survivors pursuing justice are not left to do it alone. Every contribution brings survivors closer to justice and ensures the Netherlands upholds its commitment to human rights.

Why Now?

We must act to establish accountability, no matter where crimes take place.

  • New conflicts across the world (Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and more) mean that war crimes continue to be committed while older atrocities (Srebrenica, Hawija, Chora) remain only partially addressed.
  • Dutch courts are increasingly willing to hear international crimes claims, and the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service’s specialised International Crimes Team focuses on the prosecution of international criminal cases. However, active support of civil society actors like The Nuhanovic Foundation is crucial to effectively facilitate survivors’ legal action.

About The Campaign

To raise awareness about the lived experiences of survivors of international crimes and grave human rights violations, we are running the campaign Justice: From War to Democracy and Freedom, September 2025 until March 2026. The campaign features a digital storytelling series titled Justice Journeys, a series of events titled Justice Dialogues, and a series of community-based Legal Network Justice Talks.

This campaign, which places survivors at its core, aims to highlight how law can restore freedom and recognition for survivors of international crimes, and make justice a tangible ideal for the Dutch public.

Stay tuned for release of more survivor portraits, and follow us on social media for updates on upcoming Justice Dialogues and Legal Network Justice Talks.
