Funding Sources

The Nuhanovic Foundation is a non-profit organisation registered as a “Stichting”, a Dutch legal entity similar to a foundation.

Our mission is rooted in justice, accountability, and human rights, and we ensure that our funding sources align with these core values. We receive financial support from a diverse range of ethical and reputable sources, including philanthropic foundations and private donations. Our funding partners share our commitment to upholding human rights and international law, and we rigorously assess each contribution to ensure it aligns with our ethical standards. By maintaining financial independence and integrity, we safeguard our ability to advocate for justice without compromise.

Ethical funding policy

The Nuhanovic Foundation fundraises under the guidance of its Ethical Funding Policy, which sets out the criteria for accepting donations and the use of funds received.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that the Nuhanovic Foundation can manage its activities with appropriate independence from its funders. It also provides transparency guidelines regarding the identity of funding sources to prevent any suspicion of undue influence or conflicts of interest in relation to the Foundation’s work.

The Nuhanovic Foundation is committed to upholding the following key principles in its fundraising activities:

  • Transparency and Legitimacy – The funding source must be transparent, lawful, and ethical, complying with all applicable anti-money laundering and financial integrity regulations.
  • Independence – Funding must not compromise or influence the Foundation’s programmes, priorities, or decision-making processes.
  • No Conflicts of Interest – The foundation will assess the alignment between a funder’s other activities and the Foundation’s mission. Donations will not be accepted if there is a significant conflict.
  • Reputation and Ethics – Funding will not be accepted if there is a substantial risk that public association with the funder could harm the foundation’s reputation or credibility.
  • Compliance and Review – Any donation above EUR 50,000 will undergo a formal review to assess its compliance with the Foundation’s ethical standards.

Before accepting a donation, The Nuhanovic Foundation ensures that all key principles are met.

The key principles outlined above, and The Nuhanovic Foundation’s ethical funding policy as a whole, have been adapted from the Model Ethical Funding Policy, developed by the Digital Freedom Fund together with a number of other NGOs and with pro bono support. The model policy is published under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license, making it freely available for adaptation with proper accreditation of the original authors.
