This press release issued by The State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel announces an inqiuiry into decision-making procedures of the State’s military and political echelons during the war known as ‘operation protective edge’ conducted in the Gaza strip in the summer of 2014. It will take into account the findings of the Turkel Committee in its 2013 analysis of investigative mechanisms and their implementation in Israel (see elsewhere in this section). The Turkel report made recommendations to enhance the legality and legitimacy of Israel’s investigative mechanisms upon being notified of possible violations of humanitarian or human rights law. However, commentators have observed that these recommendations have hardly been implemented. The State Comptroller’s report will be eagerly anticipated by observers of Israel’s policy and conduct the Gaza Strip.
