SUMMARY:Ensuring Accountability: Legal Challenges & Israel's International Crimes
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to invite you to a special discussion on the occasion of the filing of the Ziada case before the European Court of Human Rights. This event will serve as a critical forum to discuss the challenges faced by legal activists\, the role of the Netherlands in upholding international justice\, and the broader implications for accountability for international crimes committed by Israel. \nWe are privileged to have Francesca Albanese\, UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories\, as a special guest\, alongside leading experts in the field of international justice and human rights advocacy. \n\nEvent Details\nDate: 12th February\,\nTime: 11:30 to 13:00 CET\nLocation: Online \n\nDiscussion Topics\n1. The Ziada Case  \n\nHelen Duffy\, the legal representative\, and Ismail Ziada\, the claimant\, will provide an overview of the case\, its legal significance\, and what it represents for international justice.\n\n2. The State of Legal Activism in the Netherlands \n\nLegal activists play a crucial role in bringing cases to court\, challenging international crimes violations\, and pushing governments to uphold justice. Daan de Grefte\, Senior Legal Officer at the European Legal Support Center (ELSC)\, will discuss how civil society and legal practitioners initiate these proceedings\, what challenges they face\, and how we can strengthen solidarity networks.\n\n3. The Netherlands’ Role in Defending International Justice \n\nWhat is the responsibility of third states to provide a platform for access to justice in cases where there’s no alternative path to justice\, like in the case of Ismail Ziada?\nWhat responsibility does the Dutch government have in ensuring accountability for international crimes\, particularly when it politically or militarily supports other states.\nThe Netherlands hosts institutions like the International Criminal Court and has a special responsibility to protect the ICC’s operations. Does the Dutch government take this role sufficiently seriously?\n\nFrancesca Albanese will provide her insights into these topics\, connecting them directly to cases like Ziada vs. the Netherlands. \nThe panel will be chaired by Kate Clark\, Board Member at The Nuhanovic Foundation\, ensuring a dynamic and engaging discussion. \nClick here to register for the event.

SUMMARY:Ukraine: Just Peace - Documentary Screening & Discussion with Anya Neistat
DESCRIPTION:International law is under pressure\, and impunity is on the rise. \nFrom Ukraine and Afghanistan to Iraq and Palestine\, international crimes and grave human rights violations continue to test the limits of global justice. Too often\, perpetrators escape accountability while survivors are left fighting to have their voices heard. \nBut change is happening. Across the Netherlands and beyond\, survivors are boldly demanding justice\, accountability\, and redress. Many are taking legal action to confront the harm they or their families have endured. With the support of civil society actors like The Nuhanovic Foundation\, national courts including those in the Netherlands are increasingly stepping up to provide survivors with a platform to pursue justice! \nAt this pivotal moment\, we are thrilled to invite you to the first Justice Dialogue of our campaign\, Justice: From War to Democracy and Freedom. This series is designed to ignite vital conversations about accountability\, bringing together survivor voices\, legal experts\, and affected communities and connecting them to the wider public. \n  \nUkraine: Just Peace\nCommemorating the International Day of Peace\, our first Justice Dialogue event will feature the documentary The Cranes Call. The film follows Dr. Anya Neistat and Solomiia Stasiv as they gather evidence of human rights abuses in Ukraine\, fighting to hold Russian commanders and soldiers accountable. \nFollowing the screening\, join a panel discussion with Dr. Anya Neistat\, survivors\, members of the Ukraine Legal Network\, and the wider Ukrainian community in the Netherlands. Together\, we will explore the prospects for justice and accountability\, the critical role of survivors in shaping these processes\, and what a truly “just peace” could mean for Ukraine. \nThis dialogue drives home a powerful truth: peace without justice cannot last. Justice for Ukraine is not just an international goal\, it is a responsibility we share here in the Netherlands. \nDate\n22 September 2025 \nTime & Agenda\nDoors open: 16:30\nScreening: 17:00 – 18:30\nShort panel discussion: 18:30 – 19:15\nDrinks & networking: 19:15 – 20:00 \nVenue\nIDFA Documentary Pavilion\nVondelpark 3\, 1071 AA Amsterdam \nLanguage\nEnglish (with limited Ukrainian translation) \nThis event is free to attend\, but we strongly encourage donations. \nYour support fuels our campaign Justice: From War to Democracy and Freedom and our litigation fund\, helping survivors of international crimes pursue justice and accountability. SUMMARY:Justice Dialogue #2 - Hawija Victims vs The Dutch State
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to join us for the second event in our Justice Dialogues series\, focusing on the long-term consequences of the 2015 Dutch airstrike on Hawija\, Iraq. \nTen years after the Dutch 2015 airstrike that destroyed much of the Iraqi city of Hawija and killed more than 85 civilians\, survivors are still waiting for recognition and justice. This anniversary and the International Human Rights Day offer an important moment to reflect on what happens when civilians are caught in the crossfire of international military operations. \nThis event will uncover two interconnected perspectives on justice in the aftermath of war. The first perspective explores the route to justice — how lawyers\, journalists\, and civil society actors work together to uncover truth and accountability after conflict — and the second perspective explores the experience of justice — what it means for survivors to be represented\, recognised\, and heard. Together\, they reveal what universal justice might look like in practice\, and how diverse actors must collaborate to achieve accountability and how survivors’ voices remain vital in shaping justice outcomes. \n \nHolding this dialogue reaffirms that accountability does not end with acknowledgment. \nIt requires continued engagement from governments\, civil society\, and the public to ensure that justice reaches those most affected. \nRegister now to secure your spot!
